Arabian coffee is the quintessential coffee of the world. Arabia lends its name to the highest quality coffee plant in the world, Coffea Arabica. Arabian coffee accounts for about 80% of all coffee produced in the world. It prefers higher elevations and drier climates than its cousin C. robusta.

The tropics of South America provide ideal conditions for growing Arabian coffee which grows best between 3,000 and 6,500 feet but has been grown as high as 9,000 feet. Generally, the higher the plant is grown the slower it matures. This gives it time to develop the internal elements and oils that give coffee its aromatic flavor.

Coffee was originally discovered in Ethiopia, just across the Red Sea from Arabia. Coffee soon made its way to Yemen where it was embraced by the Islamic people. Soon it became a beverage endorsed by the Islamic clerics as drinking alcohol was prohibited in their religion. Arabian coffee soon came to be known as an Islamic beverage.

Arabian coffee was exported to Europe where the people embraced it. However, the Catholic Cardinals shunned it as the ‘Devil’s drink’ and tried to have it banned.

But then Pope Clement VIII decided that it would be imprudent to ban the beverage without having tasted it, so he summoned a sample. As legend has it, the Pope was immediately enamored by the distinct, pungent aroma and taste. He decided that to banish the delightful drink would be a greater sin. So he baptized it on the spot claiming that it would be a shame to let the impious ones have this delightful drink all to themselves.

Arabian coffee is still a part of the Islamic faith and is use in ritualistic ceremonies.

Arabian coffee growers protected their monopoly on the prized plant. They were the exclusive providers of coffee throughout the world for several hundred years.

That is until a coffee plant finally made its way to the Caribbean. This began a new legacy of high-quality coffee in Latin America.

It is said that all the Arabica coffee grown in the world started from this plant as cuttings were transplanted all over the world. Arabian coffee is truly the source of coffee throughout the world.

The word mocha comes from the name Mokha, the shipping port in Yemen where all Arabian coffee was exported. Mocha has become a term used for describing a coffee beverage in which chocolate is added. But originally it had nothing to do with chocolate.

According to research on the internet, “globally, people consume more than 330 million cups of coffee a day? After water and pop drinks, coffee has toppled tea to become the third favorite beverage of the world.”

Coffee has remained one of the most appreciated beverages of all times. Its sinfully intoxicating taste and tantalizing aroma is sufficiently copious to take your spirits to the highest levels.

Coffee does not bar your wishes by specifying any time limits, for it can be drunk any time, at any place. All you need to have is a coffee break! Thus it forms a drink for all occasions.

There are over 40 different types of coffee plants, of which ‘Arabica’ and ‘Coffee Robusta’ form the most popular varieties. The Arabica coffee beans are considered to be superior in quality than Robusta, a reason why Robusta is used chiefly for mass production.

Further, among the several methods of preparing the coffee, an espresso shot is the most popular. It is prepared by forcing the steam from boiling water through finely gained coffee. Because of this, it has a brewing time much shorter than normal coffee brewing.

Now that you are acquainted with the basics of coffee, here are a few simple tips to give that simple homemade coffee an invigorating taste with that professional look and taste.

1. Always use cold water to brew coffee as it adds to a fresher and richer taste.

2. Avoid using soft waters (regular tap water and distilled water) while preparing your cup of coffee; rather use water from purifiers or bottled spring water available with the local grocer.

3. Always clean your espresso machine thoroughly before putting it to use. Also check your cups, mugs, filters and brewers for any dirt or contaminated oils and grinds that tend to build up over the time.

4. Making your black coffee creamier: Generally, black coffee is preferred more than any other type. However you can give it a richer look by giving it an espresso shot to form a golden brown layer known as crema.

Having a hard time giving up your 4 cups of coffee each day? Evidence shows by switching to tea you can add some significant health benefits. The health benefit of drinking tea is chalked up to one explanation, antioxidants. Research shows that green and black teas have up to 8-10 times the antioxidants as fruits and vegetables which can add significantly to your health.

The research has found that regular tea drinkers - people who drink two or more cups per day - have less heart disease and stroke, lower cholesterol levels, and they may recover from heart attacks faster. You can find these benefits in black, green, oolong and even iced teas! Beware of doctoring up your tea with too much milk because this has been found to decrease the antioxidants.

Don’t despair coffee lovers! There are some teas out there that you may find match up to your love of coffee. For instance, Chai tea uses ginger and cardamom which overpowers the taste of the black tea but offers a rich, full bodied taste which is perfect for coffee consumers! Vanilla nut teas also tend to override the black tea taste for a richer flavor. Try some tea today to better your health!

Ethiopian Coffee

Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee, yet it is not a country that comes to mind when the average consumer thinks of coffee. The South American countries are much more synonymous with coffee production but coffee did not come to these countries until the early 1700’s, nearly a thousand years after it was discovered. As legend has it, Ethiopian coffee was originally discovered around 600 A.D. by a young boy tending goats. It is not known when the name coffee was applied to the strange plants but an interesting legend places it around 900 A.D.

Shortly thereafter coffee found its way across the Red Sea to Arabia and what is present day Yemen. Arabs embraced coffee and for almost a thousand years were the sole producers and exporters of the highly sought-after product. Today Ethiopian coffee is specialty coffee and favorite among connoisseurs around the world. It is known for its smooth body, delicate acidity and delightful flavor.

The original Ethiopian coffee plant that made its way to Yemen is said to be the plant that was propagated throughout the Arab world and cuttings were eventually transplanted into every main coffee growing region of the world. So, in a sense Ethiopian coffee is in every can and every cup everywhere in some form or another.

I do not know about you, but for me, coffee drinking, especially in the morning or early evening, is more than a simple habit or cultural characteristic. Actually, it has become a necessity without which I cannot open my eyes and stand on my two feet all day. According to researchers, I am not alone. Nearly 80% of the U.S. population drinks coffee on a daily basis. The caffeine measured to be contained in a cup of coffee, me and you daily consume, is around 80-130 mg. But while the medical community has warned the public of the health risks associated to caffeine intake, there still is very little linking between coffee and health problems, except in a very few cases.

Coffee, which is a beverage served cold or hot, comes from the roasted seeds of the coffee plant, almost always referred to as coffee beans. But regardless of its tremendous market success-coffee is the second most commonly traded commodity in the world surpassed only by petroleum-coffee has been blamed to be the cause of a variety of disorders ranging from indigestion to cancer, at one time or another. Since it is the main source of caffeine, which is a stimulant, coffee has had an almost constant role in the news pertaining to health problems in recent years. Surprisingly, most of these warnings and urgent health reports, describing problems like the human airways clogging, are aimed at women.

But while even doctors have been very critical of the role of coffee in women’s health, the fact of the matter remains; there is little proof that any risk to women exists from coffee drinking, especially when consumed in moderate amounts. As a matter of fact, reports have even suggested that coffee even lessen the risks of some diseases in women, such as bladder cancer. Unfortunately, since the health problems examined in relation to their linkage with coffee consumption have not yet reached indisputable results, women have reached a stage that it is almost difficult to believe anything involving the health risks of coffee and women.

The reasons why coffee has been getting such a bad reputation are based on the fact that of all drinks containing caffeine, coffee has the highest concentration amount, far exciding that of sodas. In addition, since doctors advice pregnant women to be cautious and avoid caffeinated beverages while carrying an infant, despite there being no evidence of any serious health risks involved, women tend to consider coffee drinking almost as if they were performing some kind of sin and avoid drinking it in fear of the unknown consequences. On the other hand, new research has revealed that coffee is actually beneficial to a person’s health. For example, the diuretic effect of coffee has proved that it lessens the incidence of bladder cancer in smokers, and drinking coffee regularly is also reported to lessen the onset of Parkinson’s disease.

So, what should we ladies do? The best advice that anyone can believe is the trusted advice of their doctor. Question your doctor if he/she restricts coffee and follow their advice, but stay current on health news. Although it seems impossible to know which study to believe, we have to train ourselves to tell the difference between hypothesis and fact. Being educated about our health will always make us women feel better in the long run.

Conversely with lighter roasts you will still experience a great aroma filling the air, but not quite laid on as thick as with the darker roasts.

Have you consider what you will do if you have failed to all honor the mandatory evacuation by law for the next large catastrophic and large category hurricane? You need to think of some of the essentials in some of your daily endeavors. For instance in the morning most Americans drink a cup of coffee and it is almost like the ritual.

However, after a large category hurricane hits like the ones we saw during the 2005 Atlantic tropical hurricane season, generally the power is out and there is no way to make your coffee. You cannot boil water in your microwave because there is no power. You cannot plug in your Mr. Coffee because there is no power, but you will have to find a way to boil water to make coffee or a way to make your coffee maker work.

There are many ways to do this for instance you can get a portable generator and just turn it on for a few minutes to make your coffee each day or perhaps you can boil water by making a fire out of the debris left in your yard from the hurricane.

There are little devices that you can buy to put over your coffee cup and pour on the hot water and although this may not be as good as your used to, it will suffice until the power is back on. Can you imagine a day without your morning cup of coffee; many Americans cannot imagine such a horrific event. Please consider this in 2006.

In the supermarket you have alot of choices. It is fair to say that there are thousands of companies in the coffee industry. So, how do you decide which is right for you? Do you start at the supermarket and buy every single brand of coffee on the shelf? Well, before you do that let me clue you in on the freshness of supermarket coffee.

Typically, after the coffee completes the roasting process it sits in a warehouse for about two weeks. Then the coffee is loaded on a truck and transported to a distribution center where it sits from about 48 hours to a week depending on which supermarket chain wants it the most if at all, and then it is shipped again to another distribution center owned by your favorite supermarket where again it sits until your store orders it. It then gets transported once again to your supermarket where it sits until you buy it. If the coffee is a number one seller like Folgers it sits for no more then a week, but if it is an uncommon name brand it may sit for months. How is that for freshness? YUK!!!! As my kids would say! The real catch is that the comsumer believes that they are buying a full one pound bag of coffee, but read the fine print. Almost every company sells their coffee in 12 oz bags shorting you 4 oz. This is done for less expense on shipping a truck load of coffee.

What are the alternatives to supermarket coffee? If you desire fresh roasted coffee then you need to buy straight from a roastery. Many roasteries are different, but most of them have by far fresher coffee then any supermarket. Before you purchase from a roastery call them or email them and ask when will your coffee be roasted. If they respond by saying “we have coffee already roasted” then you may want to try somewhere else. The roaster that tells you that they roast it just prior to shipping is selling you very fresh coffee.

You may ask, what is the cost difference between supermarket coffee and a roastery? Cost always vary, but if you think that $8.95 a lbs to $35.95 a lbs is to much then you probably will never have a great cup of coffee that leaves your palate screaming for more. I personally can’t stand the taste of stale coffee. I only drink the good stuff.

Getting the best cup of coffee sometimes not as simple as it look. You need the best coffee beans/grounds you can get and also the best coffee maker. Finding the right coffee beans is simple, you just need to taste different types of them until you find the one yo like best. Of course this will differ from one person to another and the same thing about finding the right coffee maker. It all depends on your budget and also your personal lifestyle.

Simplicity

If you enjoy truly rich coffee taste there is no need to buy a super duper fancy coffee machine that will cost you hundreds and even thousands of dollars. A simple Frech press will do just fine most of the time. This coffee machine is simply a glass jar equipped with a plunger. For some coffee enthusiasts this is considered the best coffee maker ever made…

To start brewing your cup of coffee all you got to do is place your preferred coffee grounds into the jar and then put some hot water in it. Boiling hot is better. Press the plunger and let it brew for a whole 4 minutes and voila you just get yourself the tastiest cup of coffee. For those of you who prefer strong coffee this coffee maker is the one for you since it produces a more concentrated coffee flavor. Best thing is the price won’t burn a hole in your pocket so you could use your savings to buy gourmet coffee beans instead.

Not Among The Average …

Another known type of coffee machine is the coffee drip machine. It is so commonly found in coffee pantries, kitchen, mini bar all around the globe people tend to think it’s the best kind. Actually it’s not the best but it does able to brew a good cup of coffee.

Not all drip machine models produce the same quality cup. Some more expensive ones allow you to set the temperature of hot water and how much of them to brew the coffee. However this type won’t be good for a long time if you need to continously serve cups of coffee. That is beause the machine keep carafe heated and thus affect the coffee flavor. No surprise that the last few cups coming from drip machine usually taste bad.

Have you ever had a rich cup of coffee with a full body taste that was filled with smooth cream? It’s a heavenly experience. Though the practice of putting cream or sugar into a coffee is often looked down on by coffee snobs and aficionados, cream can really change a coffee experience.

Flavored Creams

Flavored creams are designed to add a touch of flavor to a cup of coffee without overpowering the natural taste and aroma. Products range from basics like hazelnut and vanilla to more bizarre combinations, such as raspberry coconut and licorice caramel.

You can make your own flavored cream with flavored coffee syrups and cream simply by mixing the two. You can also combine honey and cream, chocolate and cream or your own beloved combination of ingredients.

Liquor Creams

Adding a splash of Baileys, Amarula, Irish crème, Amaretto or even Tequila Rose can really add some pop to a cup of coffee. The creaminess acts as a cream and smoother, while the liqueur is a nice addition.

Adding cream liqueurs to coffee is a nice treat for after dinner when company visits or even for the mornings when you wake up with a headache.

Soy Cream

If you suffer from a dairy intolerance or lactose problem, you can still enjoy cream in your coffee. Silk Soy Milk makes a fantastic coffee creamer that’s dairy free and tastes good.

The product comes in a small creamer size and is available in a wide range of flavors, including hazelnut and vanilla. The soy creamer typically only keeps for about a week after opening, so use it up quickly.

Whipped Cream

If you want a sweet taste to your coffee but don’t want to go overboard on the sugar, try stirring in some plain whipped cream instead. The thickness adds a bit more richness while also giving you the sweetness of the cream itself.

Whipped cream is also fantastic served on top of a dessert, flavored or chocolate coffee. Like hot chocolate, just spoon a couple tablespoons of whipped cream on top, add a few chocolate shavings and simply enjoy.

Despite what coffee experts may tell you, cream is a perfectly acceptable pleasure for every coffee lover. So, do it up with whipped cream, soy products, flavored creams, and even liqueurs. Your coffee will come alive with a full-bodied taste that’s brought to life by the richness of the cream enhancing your experience.
